Clinical associates to improve overall healthcare

The first group of students have completed their Bachelor of Clinical Medical Practice degree and graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand last week. They are to enter the health service as a new category of profession known as clinical associate.
Clinical associates will fill a role between doctor and primary healthcare nurse. They are part of the Department of Health’s plan to address weak district healthcare systems and lack of human resources in rural areas.
They will play a critical role by assisting with emergency care, procedures and inpatient care, as well as offering better care and greater outreach to the rural community.
